Below is an example of a well recorded and produced podcast. Typically your audience want a warm and intimate sounding audio experience free of extraneous sounds and imperfections. My 5 Step Process for this type of sound includes:-

  • Noise Reduction - This is the process of removing any background noise such as the sound of air con units/computer fan noise and any other distracting sounds like clicks and pops.

  • Voice Treatment - This involves ensuring the voice is clear, present and warm sounding. Plosives and imperfections are removed and the voice is levelled so that if there are more than one speaker the voices are all at the same perceived volume level.

  • Voice Editing - This is where any mistakes, stumbles or any excessive “ums” and “erms” are removed. This is carried out sensitively and to the preference of the client to ensure a natural flow of conversation.

  • Equalisation & Compression - This is to ensure a warm frequency balance and to bring the audio up to broadcast standard

  • Mastering - This is the final step of the process and ensures the final EQ and levels are set to the specifications of the hosting platform

Below is an example of a podcast that has been recorded in a noisy environment. There is a lot of “room noise” in the recording which results in a distant sounding recording. The recording is very quiet, dull sounding and there is excessive room reflections/reverberation on the voices so they sound thin, distant and don’t make for a pleasant listening experience for the listener. Using my 5 Step Process outlined above you can hear the before and after processing.
